Credentials and Reputation

One of the most important things to consider when choosing a school placement consultant is their credentials and reputation. Look for consultants who have relevant experience in the field and who have a track record of success in helping students find the right schools.

It's also a good idea to do some research on the consultant's reputation. Look for reviews and testimonials from past clients, and ask for references if possible. A reputable consultant should be happy to provide you with this information.

Client Reviews and Testimonials

Reading reviews and testimonials from past clients can give you a good idea of what to expect from a school placement consultant. Look for consultants who have a high number of positive reviews and who have helped students with similar needs to your own.

When choosing a school placement consultant, it's important to consider the cost of their services and what services they offer. Look for consultants who offer a range of services to meet your needs, and who are transparent about their fees.

Some consultants charge a flat fee for their services, while others charge a percentage of the total cost of the school. Make sure you understand what you'll be paying for and how much it will cost before you sign on with a consultant.

Understanding 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Guardianship

Guardianship in Ireland

When students attend a boarding school in Ireland, it is often required for them to have a guardian assigned. A guardian is a responsible adult over the age of 25 living in Ireland who can be there in an emergency on behalf of parents1. This person acts in the best interests of the child for the duration of their stay and ensures their welfare and safety while attending the school2.

Guardians can either be family friends or an accredited Guardianship Organisation1. These organisations, such as or 51³Ô¹ÏÍø, aim to provide a high standard of care and support throughout the child's stay in Ireland. Guardianship services include 24/7 availability in case of emergencies, assistance with travel arrangements, and regular communication with parents regarding the child's progress34.

Educational Guardian Vs Parent

While parents are ultimately responsible for their child's education and wellbeing, an educational guardian serves as a local representative and support system for students studying abroad. They act in loco parentis, meaning that they take on the parental role while the actual parents are not present1.

Educational guardians are crucial for international students as they help with various aspects such as:

  • Supervising student's academic progress and communicating with the school on behalf of parents.
  • Assisting with medical issues, doctor appointments, and insurance concerns.
  • Organising and providing transportation, accommodation, and supervision during school holidays if necessary.
  • Offering guidance and support during critical situations, such as emergencies or disciplinary issues.

Parents and educational guardians need to work closely to ensure the student's success in the boarding school4. While parents provide essential emotional support and guidance from afar, educational guardians offer practical assistance and ensure the student's needs are met on a day-to-day basis.

In summary, boarding school guardianship in Ireland is a vital aspect of ensuring a supportive and safe environment for students attending school away from their homes. Both parents and educational guardians play a crucial role in the welfare and development of the child during their stay14.

Role and Responsibilities of a Guardian

A guardian plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and welfare of international students studying in Ireland. They take on responsibilities that would typically be fulfilled by a student's natural parents, acting in loco parentis for the child during their stay in the country.

One of the primary responsibilities of a guardian is to provide support and guidance to the student by fostering a safe and nurturing living environment, ensuring their overall well-being. Guardians regularly communicate with boarding schools, attending parent-teacher meetings, and providing updates on the student's progress, achievements, and any concerns that may arise.

Another major responsibility is to ensure the student's safety and welfare by setting appropriate boundaries and creating an environment where the student feels protected and cared for. This may entail coordinating practical matters such as travel arrangements to and from the airport, overseeing medical and dental appointments, and offering assistance during emergency situations.

Guardians are also responsible for supporting students in their academic pursuits. They liaise with the school to address any academic issues and assist students in selecting appropriate courses, extracurricular activities, and ensuring timely communication with the student's parents.

Finally, a guardian plays an essential role in helping the student adapt to their new environment. Customised services: A good guardianship service should be able to adapt their offerings to the unique needs of each student and family, providing tailored care and support.

Local knowledge: Ensure that the chosen guardian has a thorough understanding of the local area around the boarding school and the Irish education system, enabling them to effectively support your child in various situations.

Reputable guardianship organisations ensure that host families undergo thorough vetting, which includes police clearance (Garda Vetting) and home assessments. These steps are designed to provide parents with peace of mind that their child receives the best possible care during their stay in Ireland.

51³Ô¹ÏÍø Guardianship programmes in Ireland prioritise the well-being of each child under their care. With a focus on maintaining open communication channels and regularly checking the students' well-being, guardians ensure that the children feel supported throughout their stay in the United Kingdom.

One of the key methods of communication used by guardians with students is through regular well-being check-ins. These check-ins can take place in person, over the phone, or via whatsapp, allowing for an effective way to monitor the students' overall happiness and progress.

During these well-being checks, guardians discuss various aspects of the students' lives, including:

  • Academic performance
  • Emotional well-being
  • Participation in extracurricular activities
  • Health and safety

In addition to these check-ins, guardians often encourage children to contact them with any concerns, questions, or difficulties they might be facing. Providing a safe and secure support system, guardians act as a liaison between students and their families as well as their schools.

As part of their commitment to a student's overall well-being, guardians also coordinate with school staff to ensure any issues are promptly addressed. They stay up-to-date with the child's progress, stepping in when necessary to offer assistance or guidance.

<![CDATA[Choosing a guardian]]>/blog/choosing-a-guardian-for-international-students-in-ireland-what-parents-need-to-know/6360aaea9e1e71003de5d21aTue, 01 Nov 2022 05:16:07 GMTin Ireland: what parents need to know

The vast majority of schools in Ireland will require their international students – i.e. their students who usually live outside Ireland - to have an educational guardian based in Ireland. Having one in place from a parent's perspective makes perfect sense. A guardian is a responsible adult over the age of 25 living in Ireland who can be there in an emergency on behalf of parents.

Parents who do not have a family friend to act as guardians can choose an accredited Guardianship Organisation, such as 51³Ô¹ÏÍø, to act in Loco Parentis for their child.

Educational guardians act in loco parentis for parents when parents are not within easy travel distance;

Educational guardians look after students during the holidays when they cannot go home; they will keep in contact with parents and provide a vital link between the school and the parents that help support students throughout their time at school in Ireland.

As a parent, therefore, you want to find an experienced educational guardian.

How do you go about it?

It is often tempting for a parent to appoint a family member as their child's guardian; sometimes, this can be a practical option. Family members, however, do not always have the time or the lifestyle to be able to care for a young person. It can also be difficult for parents to require their relatives to do things the way they want them done, especially if their relatives feel they are doing them a favour by acting as guardians.

More often than not, the answer is to choose an educational guardian through an educational guardianship organisation. When selecting a guardianship organisation, parents must ensure it is fully regulated. In Ireland, you can contact - IFEG, The Irish Federation of Educational Guardians (). Here, parents will find details of guardianship organisations which safeguard the welfare of international students studying at schools and universities on the island of Ireland. IFEG employ a rigorous process to ensure that the safety and well-being of our students meet the highest standards of care. A child's welfare is too precious to be left to chance, and regular inspection ensures that the safety and well-being of international students are the top priority for the guardians.

Parents should build a relationship with their child's guardian and should not be afraid to contact several accredited guardians to find the one they feel most comfortable working with. Ask for references from the school and the guardianship agency. Also, talk to current parents about who they would recommend.

Guardianship is worth investing in; after all, parents are investing a lot of money in school fees, and they will want to protect that investment by making sure that they are happy for the rest of the time their child spends in Ireland, safe and well looked after.
